What to Expect on a Maine Whitewater Rafting Trip
Whether you are looking for a fun first rafting day or a more challenging ride, Maine offers different river experiences for different comfort levels. From the Moosehead Lake region, guests have access to some of the best-known whitewater in the state, with the Kennebec River offering a classic big-water rafting experience, and the Penobscot River delivering a steeper, more technical run with Mt. Katahdin in view.
How Does the Day Begin?
Your day starts at base, where you meet your rafting guide, get changed, and receive your safety briefing. Wetsuits are available to rent, and life jackets and helmets are included. From there, you are transported to the put-in, so the trip begins fully guided and outfitted from the start.
What Is the Kennebec River Trip Like?
The Kennebec River trip runs from The Forks, long known as the whitewater capital of Maine, and is designed as a classic Maine rafting day for a wide range of skill levels. Expect fun-filled Class III–IV rapids at the start, followed by a more relaxing float later in the trip. Back at base, lunch is prepared for you, and a video of your adventure is included.
What Is the Penobscot River Trip Like?
The Penobscot is the wild ride of the two featured trips. It is described as a train of exciting rapids rushing through boulders, drops, and holes, with incredible views of Mt. Katahdin in the background. This is the trip for guests looking for a more intense Class IV–V whitewater experience and one of the most exhilarating rafting runs in Maine.
What Does the Trip Structure Look Like?
Both trips are guided and include transportation to the river and all required safety gear. The Kennebec is a 4–6 hour trip with a 9:00 AM check-in and a minimum age of 10. The Penobscot is a 5–7 hour trip with a 7:00 AM check-in, is available Friday through Monday, and requires guests to be at least 14 years old and 100 lbs.
